Overview
Newcastle International is the region's largest airport, handling nearly four and a half million passengers a year and providing the North East with the choice of over 80 destinations worldwide.
South Tyneside Council, along with 6 other local Councils (known collectively as LA7), are majority 51% shareholders in the airport.
The other local Councils are:

As shareholders, LA7 ensures that the airport delivers its key objectives, which are:
Regional economy - Improving connectivity to key national and international trading centres, promoting the area as a prime location for business development and assisting with the best possible economic development and inward investment for the region, ensuring that it is an attractive place to live, work, visit and do business;
Regional transport - Strengthening transport, connectivity and infrastructure and playing a key part in a comprehensive transport system for the region which meets business and community needs;
Environment - working effectively with the appropriate environmental authorities and agencies to ensure that the Airport successfully meets its responsibility towards the environment;
Growth of the Airport's activities - continued development of the Airport as a regional and transatlantic hub and continued best use of its wider assets for the expansion of the business.
Financial return - ensuring the maximum financial return to shareholders over the long term commensurate with the economic development, transport and community objectives of the Airport;
How to get there
Newcastle International is only 15 miles from South Tyneside.
There is a Metro station within the terminal that can take you right into the heart of Hebburn, Jarrow and South Shields.
The journey time from Newcastle International Airport to South Shields by public transport is 52 minutes.
Achievements
The airport was voted 'Best Large Airport 2014' by 'Which' magazine.
DoubleTree by Hilton opened a brand new state of the art hotel in December 2011, providing luxurious accommodations and outstanding meeting and event facilities. It boasts 179 rooms, more than 2,200 square feet of flexible meeting space and conference facilities, a restaurant and bar, and is located less than a minute's walk from the airport's terminal.
November 2011 saw the airport being crowned the Best UK Airport with up to six million passengers at the prestigious Airport Operators Association (AOA) Awards ceremony for the third year running - a first in the history of the awards.
The Emirates' daily service to Dubai flourishes - January 2011 saw the 500,000th passenger travel through Newcastle. As a result, in February 2012, Emirates announced that it will add more than 2,000 seats a week to and from Newcastle when it introduces a larger aircraft on its daily flight to Dubai from 1st September, 2012. A 428-seat Boeing 777-300ER, the longest aircraft to ever operate from Newcastle, will replace a 278-seat Airbus A330-200 on the route - a capacity increase of more than 50 per cent. The upgrade comes on the fifth anniversary of the route's launch. Since 1st September, 2007, almost 700,000 passengers have travelled with Emirates to and from the North East.
In July 2010, the airport celebrated its 75th anniversary with a series of exceptional events and phenomenal support from airline and business partners.
