Overview

South Tyneside is in a prime position for accessing the cities of Newcastle and Sunderland. A fantastic range of transport links are available, including a rail network, Metro system, regular buses and cross-river ferries to North Tyneside

Metro

The Metro system is the ideal way to travel between the city and the seaside and has been rated as one of the UK's most efficient modes of transport, serving Tyneside and Sunderland.

The Metro provides a fast and frequent service in and around Tyne and Wear.

Ferry

The Shields Ferry provides a convenient link across the Tyne from South to North Shields (journey time: 7 minutes). The Ferry landing is a short walk from South Shields Transport Interchange.

Park and Ride is available at North Shields ferry landing and bicycles are permitted on the ferry at no extra charge.

Trains

Newcastle's Central Station is on the main East Coast railway line between London and Edinburgh and there are regular services from the Midlands and the West. The station is located in Newcastle city centre and is the regional hub for both long and short distance rail services.

Central Station Metro station is located within the rail station and offers a direct connection to South Shields Transport Interchange (journey time: 26 minutes).

Buses

South Shields Transport Interchange is in the centre of South Shields and serves routes to Gateshead, Newcastle and Sunderland. Stagecoach and Go North East bus operators serving the Borough sell discounted return tickets.
