Overview
Arts and culture are very important to South Tyneside.
South Tyneside Council's Cultural Development team works with partners to help drive forward the sector.
We aim to support, nurture, grow and celebrate South Tyneside's unique arts and culture offer.
We want to provide great community arts and cultural activity, which everyone can get involved with.
About arts and culture
Culture is what defines us - it is woven through everyone's lives.
It includes our:
- heritage
- museums
- libraries
- performing and visual arts
- and, our natural environment and architecture
Arts and culture has a positive impact on our health and wellbeing and makes a significant contribution to our local economy, ensuring South Tyneside is an attractive place to live, invest and enjoy.
South Tyneside has a rich arts and cultural scene, and we wish to develop it even further.
Making Waves Cultural Strategy
'Making Waves' is the Cultural Strategy for South Tyneside.
It outlines how South Tyneside Council and partners plan to support and develop arts and culture in South Tyneside.

South Tyneside Cultural Partnership
The South Tyneside Cultural Partnership group was established in Autumn 2021.
The aim of the group is to develop arts and culture across the area.
It has jointly produced the Making Waves Cultural Strategy and will work together to deliver actions and activities identified in it.
The group consists of:
- Citizens Assembly South Tyneside (CAST)
- Creative Seed
- Gateshead and South Tyneside Music Hub
- Groundwork South and North Tyneside
- National Trust
- Sangini
- South Tyneside Council
- Sunderland University
- The Cultural Spring
- The Customs House
- Tyne Coast College
- Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums Service
South Tyneside Local Cultural Educational Partnership (LCEP)
The South Tyneside Local Cultural Educational Partnership (LCEP) is a combination of partners from the arts, culture and education sectors.
The aim of the partnership is to encourage more of South Tyneside's children and young people to get involved in high quality arts and cultural activities.
