Marking a Chapter in History

An organisation which supports older and lonely people in South Tyneside is to publish a book of memories to mark the Queen's Jubilee.

Happy at Home - part of the Churches Together project - which works with elderly residents in the Borough who are lonely, isolated or vulnerable is working with a local historian and photographer to capture and record memories of what life was like in the early 1950s and how people celebrated the day of the coronation.

This week those involved with the project visited the Mayor of South Tyneside, Councillor Pat Hay, who agreed to provide a foreword for the book.

The Mayor said: "Happy at Home does tremendous work in easing the loneliness of some of our older residents so I am delighted to support this endeavour.

"Capturing the memories and anecdotes of local people who were alive at the time of the Queen's coronation is a wonderful idea. I'm sure all those who took part in sharing their stories enjoyed their trip down memory lane while the book is a very fitting tribute to the Queen in her Jubilee year."

Copies of the book will be given out to everyone involved with Happy at Home at Jubilee parties they plan to hold over the Summer.
