Monkton in the Running for Extra Funding
South Tyneside Council has announced investment for Monkton Stadium.
Building on the Council's proven track record for outstanding leisure facilities across the Borough, the investment will enhance the offer for athletes in South Tyneside.
Cllr Ed Malcolm, Lead Member for Resources and Innovation at South Tyneside Council said: "The Council's investment in leisure facilities across the Borough has created outstanding facilities for our residents to enjoy. In 2020/21 we will be improving our leisure offer further, with an upgrade to Monkton Stadium."
Discussions are currently underway with England Athletics and various user groups to ensure that the investment is directed towards the things that matter most to existing users, whilst still providing something unique and fresh that will appeal to an entirely new audience.
Jonathan Gilroy, Chair of Jarrow and Hebburn Athletic Club at Monkton said: "We welcome the announcement for investment in Monkton. The stadium provides vital facilities that we don't have elsewhere in the borough. We look forward to working with the Council to help develop future plans so that our athletes can continue to train locally in the heart of South Tyneside."
Investment in Monkton builds on the Council's long-term vision for community facilities in South Tyneside and a decade of investment in the Borough's leisure facilities. Hebburn Central, Haven Point, Jarrow Community Pool and Jarrow Focus strengthen each town's offer, attracting visitors and private sector investment. South Tyneside Council's leisure offer now supports over one million users per year.
