Overview

You may be asked to complete a Baseline Security Check before you start work at South Tyneside Council.

Baseline Security Checks are seen by the Government as an important precaution to confirm the identity of an individual (employee or contractor) and their right to work in the UK.

You will need to provide certain documents as evidence.

Checking your documents

We need to see the original of any document you are using as evidence of your right to work in the UK.

Appointments are available at the Hawthorne Building. Please contact HR Services to arrange a suitable date and time on 0191 424 6640.

You will also need to bring the original documents on your first day of work for your manager to check.

Documents to provide

Proof of name

Please provide 2 of the following:

  • Original birth certificate
  • Current UK passport
  • National Insurance number card
  • Medical card
  • UK photocard driving licence or old style full UK licence
  • UK residence permit
  • EEC identity card
  • Current benefit book or original notification letter from DWP
  • Adoption or marriage certificate
  • Divorce papers
  • HM Forces identity card

Address 

Please provide 2 of the following. Utility bills or financial statements should be dated within the last 3 months:

  • Council tax bill, recent gas, water or electricity bill
  • Proof of residence from a financial institution (bank)
  • Recent bank, credit card or mortgage statement from recognised lender
  • Current council rent card
  • Current tenancy agreement
  • Current driving licence (old paper style version, photo card associated with counterpart licence)
  • Payslips, P45 or P60

Photo ID

Please provide 1 of the following:

  • Current UK passport
  • Current UK photocard
  • EEC identity card
  • UK photo card current driving licence

If you do not have photo ID please provide an additional name and address document, for example a utility bill.

Proof of signature

Please provide 1 of the following:

  • Current UK passport
  • Current UK driving licence

If you do not have either of these, a bank card (not credit card) may be used.

Date of birth

Please provide 1 of the following:

  • Current driving licence
  • Current passport
  • Original birth certificate

National Insurance number 

Please provide 1 of the following:

  • National Insurance number card
  • P60

Proof of right to work in the UK 

Please provide 1 of the following:

  • Current UK passport
  • Evidence of right to work in the UK

Employment history

If you have worked for the Council for less than 3 years, please provide:

  • the names and addresses of all employers for the past 3 years
