Funding to boost a South Tyneside community was agreed at a community meeting last week.

The East Shields and Whitburn Commmunity Area Forum (CAF) has agreed funding for 17 schemes including improvements to roads, footpaths and parking facilities.

South Tyneside Homes also received funding for upgrades to flats, fencing, canopies, walls, railings, gates and paintwork in certain areas.

Money from the CAF will also be provided to support foodbanks as well as other community groups.

Chair of the CAF, Councillor Alex Donaldson, said: "It is great that we have been able to provide money to projects and community groups in the area. It will certainly have a positive impact on the community and its surrounding environment, providing many benefits to residents and visitors.

"We always talk about a range of issues at our CAF meetings that have a direct impact on members of the public. Despite the challenges we are facing during these unprecedented times, we are doing our best to ensure that residents are still able to find out what is happening in their local community."

At its meeting in April earlier this year, South Tyneside Council's cabinet approved funding totalling just over £1.4million across all five Community Area Forums covering the period from May 2020 to February 2021.

An additional £2,000 of funding has also been provided to each CAF into a separate funding pot to be used for communities' response to Covid-19.
