Projects to improve a local community were awarded funding at a community meeting last week.

Riverside Community Area Forum (CAF) agreed on funding to support several schemes in the area including improvements to car parking facilities for residents and visitors.

South Tyneside Homes was allocated additional funding to deploy litter pickers which will be used to address an accumulation of waste at Readhead park.

Funding from the CAF was also awarded to a local community group so it can continue to provide ongoing support to local people.

Chair of the CAF, Councillor Lynne Proudlock, said: "We are delighted to have been able to support our community by providing funding for valuable projects which will have a direct impact on residents.

"Despite the challenges we are facing during these unprecedented times, we are doing our best to ensure that residents are still able to find out what is happening in their local community."

At its meeting in April earlier this year, South Tyneside Council's cabinet approved funding totalling just over £1.4million across all five Community Area Forums covering the period from May 2020 to February 2021.

An additional £2,000 of funding has also been provided to each CAF into a separate funding pot to be used for communities' response to Covid-19.
