Bridge Works Due to Start

Major repair works to two bridges in South Tyneside are due to get underway next week.

Structural refurbishment will be carried out on the Albert Road and Kirkstone Avenue bridges, both in Jarrow.

The Albert Road Bridge, which is on the A185 and spans Network Rail and Metro lines, also requires strengthening works. The 51-year-old structure was last refurbished in 1988.

The refurbishment, funded by the Local Highways Maintenance Challenge Fund, will include concrete repairs, resurfacing, new bridge joints, full re-waterproofing of the bridge deck and replacement parapets.

The Kirkstone Avenue footbridge, known locally as the 'Banana Bridge' spans the A19 south of the Lindisfarne roundabout.

This bridge will be completely removed from site to be fully refurbished, repaired and modified before being reinstalled. The works will include replacement of the parapets as well as raising the level of the bridge above the A19 to enable removal of the existing limited headroom restrictions on the A19 slip roads.

Cllr Mark Walsh, Lead Member for Housing and Transport, said: "Routine structural inspections identified the need for the bridges to undergo essential maintenance to ensure their long-term safety.

"The opportunity is also being taken on the Kirkstone Avenue bridge to remove the height restrictions and thereby enhance safety for both bridge and road users.

"There will also be the option to use a free taxi bus and minibus that will be provided for residents and pupils who would normally use this bridge on their daily route.

"Works on both bridges are scheduled to commence at the same time and there will be fully signed diversions in place.

"Having a safe and efficient highways and infrastructure network is vital to support sustainable growth and help keep our businesses and communities connected."

Esh Construction has been appointed to carry out the refurbishment of both bridges, following a competitive tender exercise.

Steve Conn, Divisional Director at Esh Construction, said: "We are pleased to be working with South Tyneside Council to deliver important bridge refurbishment and structural works across two busy locations in Jarrow.

"The scheme will contribute to a safe and serviceable road network which is required keep the local community connected and support the region's economic growth."

The works are scheduled to start next Friday and the overall duration of the combined schemes works is expected to be around 35 weeks.
