Support with internet access and data
If you claim certain benefits you may be able to access cheaper broadband and phone packages. Ofcom is encouraging companies to help customers on low incomes. Current prices range from £10 to £20. If you or someone in your household claims Universal Credit, you could switch to any of the tariffs available.
Visit the Ofcom website for more information.
Computers and free internet
There are free computers and internet access at South Tyneside libraries. The libraries are at:
- Cleadon Park
- The Word, South Shields
- Jarrow Focus

All you need to bring with you is your library card. If you don't have a library card, it is very easy to join.
For more information, see South Tyneside Council Libraries: Computer and internet access.

Digital switch over extension
The deadline date for the digital transformation of phone networks from analogue to digital systems has been extended 31 January 2027.
As the transformation of Openreach's phone networks continues, the reliability of analogue systems over digital phone lines is decreasing. This emphasises the urgency of moving to reliable digital solutions sooner rather than later.
The risks of delaying this move include increased failed call rates which could have serious consequences, especially for vulnerable populations.
