Intelligence Update - May 2023

The ONS have released 2021 mid-year population estimates, based on the results of the 2021 Census. They are not comparable with estimates for previous years. Rebased estimates for 2012 to 2020 will be published in due course, trends are currently unavailable.

19 indicators have been updated in the May release of the Public Health Outcomes Framework including:

Children in absolute low income families (under 16s) was updated to 2021 / 22. Absolute low income is defined as a family in low income Before Housing Costs (BHC) in the reference year in comparison with incomes in 2010 to 2011. A family must have claimed one or more of Universal Credit, Tax Credits or Housing Benefit at any point in the year to be classed as low income in these statistics.
27.2% of children in South Tyneside in 2021 / 2022 lived in absolute low income, the third highest in the region and significantly higher than both the North East and England.

The under 18 conception rate in South Tyneside was 15.0 per 1,000. This was statistically similar to both the region and England. South Tyneside had the third lowest rate in the region. Amongst those under 16 South Tyneside had a rate of 3.3 per 1,000, statistically similar to both the region and England.
The rate looked after children whose emotional wellbeing is a cause for concern was 37.0%, this was almost identical to both the region (38%) and England (37%).

HPV vaccination coverage for two doses in males aged 13 to 14 years old for 2021 / 22. South Tyneside had a rate of 67.7%. This was significantly higher than the region (55.1%) and England (62.4%), however, this was below the acceptable target of 80%. Amongst females ages 13-14 coverage in South Tyneside was 65.9%, this was similar to England (62.4%) but significantly higher than the region (55.1%).
In 2021/22 vaccination coverage for Meningococcal ACWY conjugate vaccine (MenACWY) at 14 to 15 years was 80.7% in South Tyneside, achieving the 80% acceptable benchmark. South Tyneside was significantly better than the region (78.5%) and similar to England (79.6%).

Percentage of 5 year olds with experience of visually obvious dentinal decay was updated to 2021/22. At 20.4% South Tyneside had a rate that was similar to both the region (22.2%) and England (23.7%).
In 2021/22 preventable sight loss caused by age related macular degeneration (2021/22) was 109.5 per 100,000, this was statistically similar to both the region (115.7) and England (103.8).
In 2021/22 preventable sight loss caused by glaucoma was 8.7 per 100,000, statistically similar to both the region (13.2) and England (12.6).

Between 2019 and 2021 premature births (less than 37 weeks gestation) in South Tyneside were 87.1 per 1000, this was the highest in the region. South Tyneside had a rate that was statistically similar to the region (81.0) but was significantly higher than England (77.9).
In 2020 / 21 emergency admissions (under 1 year) were 333.8 per 1,000 in South Tyneside, this was the second lowest rate in the region. South Tyneside had a significantly lower rate to both the region (449.7) and England (366.6).
Despite having the second lowest rate of emergency admissions in 0-4 year-olds in the region at 175.3 South Tyneside had a significantly higher rate than England (161.5).
In South Tyneside in 2021/22 emergency admissions amongst those under 18 years was 76.6 per 1,000. This was significantly higher than England (70.7) but significantly lower than the region (93.1).
In 2021/22 the rate of A&E attendances amongst those under 1 year were 2084.4 per 1,000. This was significantly higher than both the region (1,519.0) and England (1,094.5).
The rate of A&E attendances in those under 18 years was 749.7 per 1,000. This was significantly higher than both the region (576.2) and England (439.8).
