Go Green and Recycle this Christmas

Residents of South Tyneside are being encouraged to 'go green' and recycle over the festive season.

Christmas cards, cardboard, metal tins, jars and plastic bottles can all be recycled in the main part of your blue bin, whilst newspapers and magazines can go in the inner caddy.

However plastic bags, black sacks, wrapping paper, polystyrene, bows and ribbons, tinsel, Sellotape and any items containing glitter and glue should be disposed of inside of the grey household bin.

With many planning to visit the Borough's Recycling Village to dispose of their Christmas waste, residents are reminded that they need to book their visit in advance.

Councillor Ernest Gibson, Lead Member for Transport and Neighbourhoods, said: "We want to encourage people to recycle as much as possible in South Tyneside.

"However, it is vital that residents check which items can go in their blue bin before recycling.

"Putting the wrong item in a blue bin can result in an entire load of recycling becoming contaminated and thus not able to be recycled.

"Residents are also reminded that batteries and items containing batteries, including vapes, cannot go in either bin due to the safety risk they pose.

"Batteries must be removed from items and recycled at the Recycling village or at one of the any battery recycling points across the borough."

The Recycling village will be open every day from 9am to 6pm except for Christmas day when it is closed.

Residents are also advised that they can recycle their Christmas trees at 14 sites across South Tyneside up to 13 January.

Only real Christmas trees, with all decorations removed, are accepted at these sites. The Council turns the trees into compost and soil improver, some of which goes to local parks and green spaces.
