Join the library online

When you join the library online, you can begin using our online services (like ebooks and online magazines) straight away.

To borrow hardcopy books or use electronic facilities in our libraries, please bring your online membership details and one proof of identity (this must include your address) to any South Tyneside library.

Join the library in person

You can join the library in person at any South Tyneside Library, it only takes a few minutes and you can start using the library straight away.

To join, simply go to reception and ask for a membership form.

You will also need to bring one form of identification with you, which must include your name and present address. If you are under 16 years old a parent / guardian must sign your membership form, and may be asked for proof of address.

You will be given a membership ticket, which you will need to bring with you each time you visit the library.

If you are under 16 years old, you will become a member of the junior library.

You will still be able to use the junior library. You will get an adult library ticket when you turn 16.


Your personal information

For the purposes of the Data Protection Act South Tyneside Council is the Data Controller. 

The personal information you have provided will be used to create and manage your library membership. 

Your personal information may be shared with third-party providers who deliver some of our services including public computers, eBooks and Digital Magazines. 

Your information will not be shared with anyone else unless we are legally obliged to do so or ask for your consent to do so.

Your personal information will be kept secure and will only be held as long as you remain a member of South Tyneside Libraries, which you can cancel at any time, providing you do not have any items outstanding.


Using ICT facilities

Computers with Office facilities, scanning, printing and internet access are available in all of our libraries.

To use these facilities, you must be a library member and will need to read and consent to abide by the libraries Acceptable use policy currently in force. Charges may apply.

Under 16s

To use the ICT facilities, you need to be a library member.

Your parent or guardian will need to read the ICT Acceptable Use Policy, then sign that they agree for you to use to the ICT facilities.


South Tyneside libraries app

You can access a range of services on the app from borrowing, reserving or renewing a title, finding out information about opening hours and events taking place at your local library and lots more.

The South Tyneside libraries app is available to download on the Apple Store and Android.
