Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (2022)
About this publication
The Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (SHLAA) is a technical background document that all local authorities are required to prepare under the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF 2019).
The National Planning Policy Framework states that local planning authorities should "have a clear understanding of housing need in their area" and should "prepare a Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment to establish realistic assumptions about the availability, suitability and the likely economic viability of land to meet the identified need for housing over the plan period".
The primary role of the SHLAA is to identify and assess sites to determine if they have potential to provide for housing in South Tyneside.
This document has now been updated, see Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment (2023).
