Anyone living within a mile and a half of a store can access its food services, receiving a free membership after showing a valid form of ID, allowing them to shop there once per week.

People pay £4 and receive over £20 worth of goods, which they can choose themselves, in accordance with the available produce at any given time.

Additionally, the community shops provide a dedicated space for wellbeing support in two of our locations (Horsely Hill & Hudson Street).

This support includes:

  • classes and activities to help foster community engagement, such as photography and audio skills, support sessions for young mothers, and sessions for older residents
  • a chance for community residents to come together and promote positive mental health

South Tyneside Food Bank

The service operates the South Tyneside Food Bank which is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10am to 12pm.

Food banks help to prevent family breakdown, housing loss, crime and mental health problems. The South Tyneside Food Bank is supported solely by donations from the public.

Who can access the service

People wishing to access this service must do so via one of the partner agencies. For example, people currently working with social services can approach their social worker.

The agency will assess need and issue a voucher if appropriate. The voucher can then be exchanged for a food parcel at our regular food bank session.

Cost

There are no charges for the service but the charity does accept donations.
