Planners to Consider Glass Office Development
A planning application has been submitted for a striking glass-fronted riverside office building in South Shields.
The proposed development would be built on former brownfield land in the Harton Quay area of the town.
It would be constructed across five storeys with basement parking, a reception area offering co-working space and coffee bar, and a roof terrace with panoramic views.
The development would provide 50,000 sq ft of Grade A office accommodation and would aim to be one of the first near-net carbon zero office building in the region, with outstanding sustainability ratings.
The southern part of the site would feature a landscaped area leading down to the Grade II-listed Customs House and Harton Quays Park, linking to the town centre.
If approved, the development would transform vacant brownfield land and would acknowledge the site's industrial heritage by retaining the chimney and historic wall from the former Swinburne Glassworks.
It would form part of a new living, working and cultural quarter in this part of the town.
The application, which has been submitted by South Tyneside Council and its development partner Muse, will be considered by the council's planning committee in due course.
